Victor Castro
Guitarist, arranger, and composer Victor Castro was born in Angra do Heroísmo – Azores. He graduated in classical guitar from the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo, where he studied with the Azorean Carlos Baptista Ávila, and with Americans Steven Rings, Thimothy Johnson, Miles D. Barford, and Eddy Goldz. He completed his studies with Roberto Hugo (Uruguay). He holds a degree in Music from the Federal University of Maranhão – Brazil. At the University of Aveiro, he studied with Paulo Vaz de Carvalho, who was also his academic advisor. He attended masterclasses with renowned guitarists such as David Russell, Ana Vidovic, Fábio Zanon, among others.
He has recorded four CDs, one of which is entirely dedicated to the *Citara Portuguesa* (Portuguese Guitar), an instrument he also plays and teaches. He has performed solo concerts in mainland Portugal and in all the Azores and Madeira Islands, as well as in Spain, Germany, the United States, Argentina, Finland, and Brazil.
He has performed with various Portuguese and international musicians. In 2005, together with Azorean guitarist Paulo Cunha, he developed the project “Tribute to Carlos Paredes,” in which he plays compositions by the celebrated guitarist on the Coimbra guitar. He was invited to participate in the IV and V *Semana do Violão* in São Luís, Brazil. He won the “Raphael Rabelo” award twice at the National Guitar Festival of Piauí (FENAVIPI). Highlights of his career include premiering works by several composers, including Thimothy Johnson, Antero Ávila, Thomas Kupsch, and Ubiratan Sousa; performing at the “10th of June” celebration concert for His Excellency President Dr. Jorge Sampaio; being invited to the Guitar Cycle of the Coimbra Department of Culture and to the Francisco Lacerda International Festival; and performing the complete guitar works of Lopes-Graça in concert at the SPA Auditorium in Lisbon. In 2010, he was honored in Lisbon by the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities with the “Talento 2009” Award. He toured mainland Portugal and the Azores, performing 22 concerts with his “Victor Castro Trio.”
He released a series of books, including transcriptions of sonatas by Italian composers Baldassare Galuppi and Francesco Gasparini. Through AvA Publishing, he has also published original compositions and arrangements. He performed as a soloist with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (OSB) and with the Orchestra of the State Music School of Maranhão. He taught classical guitar at the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo (Portugal). He lived in São Luís – MA (Brazil), where he was a classical guitar professor at the State Music School of Maranhão and at UEMA (State University of Maranhão). Currently, he runs his own music school in Aveiro and continues to divide his time between solo performances and collaborations with other musicians.
